SWIMMING CLASS Thursday, 22 November 2007
by Melinda

The students made a splash yesterday at their swimming lesson. Well done to all of you who got in the water and gave it a go. It was quite entertaining, not to mention Mart's classic belly flop, and Jennifer's laugh or was it a cry with every instruction. Those boys can swim relatively fast too. In fact, everybody who was in the water did their best, learnt something new and enjoyed themselves. We'd just like to thank Mae for organising it, also thanks to Brooke and a ll the helpful instructors at Manly Leagues Club.

We had a blast! Next time we're going get photos of those trendy swimming costumes you all wore.

WAGNER AND CAIO Tuesday, 20 November 2007

Wagner came to visit Maewill today. He studied at Maewill last year with his girlfriend and now he's sponsored and working for a local company. His brother Caio is currently studying at Maewill so it was great to see them both together at MEC. We got some photos with teachers Angela, Deborah and Jesse. So, I wonder which brother is the better student?

GOODBYE GOEUN Thursday, 15 November 2007

Today was Goeun's last day of study after more then 8 months studying at Maewill English College. Goeun worked really hard during that time and her English improved a lot. She also made many friends, with students, teachers and the staff. Now she's returning to Korea. Good luck Goeun, we'll miss you! Goeun also wrote a few words about her time here:

by Goeun
I remember exactly my first day at Maewill on 26th of February . Mae asked me about my passport, but I couldn't say anything to Mae. I was really shy and felt nervous to talk with somebody in English at that time. I started the class from Pre- intermediate and conversation 1. When I was in Korea, I never imagined that I would study with foreign friends and teachers.

I've studied at Maewill for about 9 months, and now I feel comfortable when I study and talk with foreign friends in the class. I met lots of good friends and also I learn many good things from them. While I was studying at Maewill, my personality was changed more cheerful, optimistic and confident. I had precious and important experience, besides I got beautiful memories that I will never forget.

I'm very happy but also sad. I will miss everyone. I really love Maewill College and every teachers and students! I'm going to study English continually after I will go back to Korea. I believe that one day I will visit to Maewill again! I'm thankful to every teachers from my heart.

SCULPTURE BY THE SEA Friday, 16 November 2007

by Michaela
Last Friday we visited 'Sculptures by the Sea'. It was situated between Bondi and Tamarama beach. It's an exhibition that takes place annually for 10 days. Many people from different countries exhibit the sculptures which have created. They can use any type of material they want. Most students found it difficult to understand what each specific sculpture meant without looking at notes. However, it was a long sunny day and all of  us enjoyed it.

by Jonghyun
Last Friday it was a gorgeous day! Everybody could see the blue sky and feel the cool breeze. So we delightedly went to Bondi Beach which is known as the most beautiful beach in SYDNEY. Actually it was a lovely beach. We could see many innovative sculptures along the beach. To see an exhibition on the cliff was so amazing. We were fascinated by charming landscapes. We had a great time at Bondi Beach. I'd like to visit there one more time if i could. It was an unforgettable excursion.

by Yuri
I went to Bondi Beach. There were many sculptures. I was surprised because a lot of beaches don't usually have sculptures. On Friday the weather was so hot. And the sky was so clear. We were walking for a long time. And the sculptures were wonderful. There were various kinds of sculptures. They looked like a lemon tree, like a rocket, and lots of geometric architectural things. And human features made of iron. In addition to that the beach was so beautiful. The sea colour looked like emerald with blue. I felt so emotional, it was too wide and the sand was soft and white. I had a fantastic time! I want to go to there again.

by Rika
The weather was brilliant on Friday. We left school at 9pm to go to Bondi beach for an activity. There were a lot of structures from Tamarama beach to Bondi. I borrowed a guidebook from Debora and I saw some structures that Japanese people made. One of the most interesting structures is a Japanese one, which is near the sea and in a good location. The artist said he is looking forward to hearing from children what they feel. It means we could touch the structure, so a lot of children touched it. Of course I touched it. It looked beautiful and interesting and felt strange but comfortable. I liked it. After 1 hour, I realized no students were around me, so I saw the structures alone and arrived at Bondi beach around 12pm. I had a good time. If you didn't go there, you had better go next year. I thought decorating the structures near the sea is a very Australian thing to do.

NEW STUDENTS AT MAEWILL Tuesday, 13 November 2007

Today I met Miki from China and Fabiola from Brazil. Miki is enrolled in the Preparation for High School class and Fabiola is studying General English. When I met them they were halfway through their orientation with Mae. The orientation includes all the information about the school, life in Australia and of course how to learn as much English as possible. The bad news is there is also an orientation test. Good Luck Miki and Fabiola! And while I was walking around with the camera I came across Angela's Conversation class. It looked like fun so I popped in to say hi. Caio looked pretty scary with his Frankenstein injury but he stood at the back of the photo so that was okay. And why is Raymond smiling so much?

Sandra's Conversation class were pretty busy but were kind enough to give me a few moments to take a photo. It is Oscar's last day tomorrow but he wouldn't tell me where he was going - maybe Indonesia? And last but not least was Deborah's class. I had to wait to get the photo because they were having a late break - too much work to do obviously. And in Deborah's class it was Heitor's was last day, kind of. He's going to Maewill Gold Coast tomorrow to study with Fiona - good luck. And I couldn't get any photos of the IELTS and High School classes because they were doing tests and working on their assignments, maybe next week.

CONGRATULATIONS REBECCA AND CHRIS Tuesday, 13 November 2007

You might remember what your teacher Rebecca looked like on her last day, 2 weeks ago - very pregnant (see 2nd photo above). Well, on Saturday at 6:30am Rebecca had her baby, a healthy little girl. They've called her Nicola Mae. She weighed around 3kg and the family are all back home already. We are looking forward to seeing Rebecca and Nicola Mae at school soon. It was also her birthday yesterday so that's double Congratulations from all the staff and students at Maewill!

ROCK CLIMBING Friday, 09 November 2007
by Vince

It's raining today, this week was a rainy week. To be honest I don't like rain because I can't do any outside sports which I like very much. But, today I went to play a sport which is called rock climbing. I thought it was significant for me. After a difficult test we set off for the rock climbing centre. The rain was so light that I walked in the rain for the whole trip without an umbrella. The trip lasted for 30 minutes then we got there. It was a gigantic place with many high walls. I was excited about everything, I nosed about here and there. Then Tathiana gave us a form and asked us to fill it in. The instructor taught us how to put on our protection and how to protect others in the correct way.

Then all of us had to put on protection. We worked in pairs. I worked with Ron. First climbing was quite easy. Both of us finished it. But when I climbed another one I stopped halfway. There were no big rocks for me to step on. I could hold some rocks but it didn't work. I couldn't go up or down! At last I gave up. One reason was that I was too tired. My arms nearly got cramp. Another reason was that I didn't have enough willpower. I thought activity was good for people to learn to conquer difficulties on e by one. It not only makes a physically strong body but also makes your mid become strong. So I think it's very important for us to be more persevering.

by Jennifer Jin
When I woke up this morning, I felt exciting about going rock climbing. Today I faced my biggest physical challenge that I ever had for sports exercise since I came to Maewill. When we arrived at the rock climbing place, I saw the height of the wall and at that time my heart was pumping fast. Lot of people think rock climbing isn't that scary and it is fun, so I tried to climb up the wall and down. When I climbing I said to my self, "I can not feel scared, I must complete the mission! Nothing is impossible!" At the end I made it, I had success in the biggest physical challenge at Maewill; this challenge tells me that nothing is impossible if I try.

MARCIO'S LAST DAY Thursday, 08 November 2007
by Marcio

I'm very happy but also sad today because it's my last day at Maewill. I started studying English at Maewill 4 months ago. When I arrived here I couldn't speak any English. I never learned English in my country, Brazil. But now my English is good good good! I'm very grateful for all the help I've received from everyone at Maewill. The teachers helped me and encouraged me to improve my English. Now my speaking and listening is much better and people can understand me and I can meet new people. Thanks you to all the staff at Maewill especially Deborah, James, Jesse and Andrea. I'm not sure what I am going to do now, probably enjoy my holiday. I will visit you soon. Tchau!

The Melbourne Cup is Australia's most famous horse race. It is held every year on the first Tuesday of October. The horse race only lasts a few minutes but the parties all around Australia last much longer. At Maewill there was a party to celebrate the Melbourne Cup and also a quiz so the students could learn more about the Cup, its history and the horses racing.

THE BLUE MOUNTAINS Friday, 02 November 2007

by Brian
An Unforgettable trip to the Blue Mountains.
They have the same position in people's hearts as the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. So what makes the Blue Mountains so important? Last Friday we got the answer. Although it was raining when we set off to the Blue Mountain, I thought maybe the rain would give the Mountain another beauty. On the way, we saw many traditional Aussie style houses which were surrounded by farms and cows. It reminded me of my childhood when I was living in the country. We arrived at about 11:00am, the area of the Mountain was filled with fog, it gave me a sense of mystery. When the bus was half way up the mountain, from the interval of trees we already could see the three sisters with fog! Some of us couldn't help screaming because of the inspiring landscape, of course including me. Sometimes we were confused about where we were, when we went into the forest the feeling was just like it's not a real world, it's really too beautiful. Not only the landscape but also the cable car in the sky made us scream. The feeling was just like a free fan. Awesome! The local wine of Blue Mountains was also as beautiful as it. The quality and kinds are very good. I also bought some red wine as a gift for my father! Ha, my father will be very happy. I can't remember when we went back home because I was lost in the natural beauty. The Blue Mountains provided an unforgettable memory!

by Vince
That was an awesome day. "Such a rainy day!" My homestay mother said that morning. We were both disappointed because she was going to do some exercise and I was going to the Blue Mountains. But being wet is not good for us. We still wanted to go to the Blue Mountains on that raining day. First we were told about the three sisters. I was very happy when I heard the word 'sister' I thought there must be three gorgeous girls. But after standing behind three hills I was absolutely disappointed. "Those three girls are a little tall for me..." But it was not very bad. I enjoyed the landscape of the Blue Mountains. It was awesome. It was great! In the afternoon, the weather changed its face. It turned sunny. We took a special car up the Blue Mountains. The mountain was nearly blue. Maybe it was caused by the mist. I hope we can travel to another good big place like the Blue Mountains next time, but not on a rainy day!

GHOST TOUR Thursday, 25 October 2007

by Shulin
Last night we went to the Quarantine Station. It was a Halloween activity. We heard legends and ghost stories there. A guide led us when we visited the Quarantine Station. The houses were beautiful and mysterious. There was a hospital, many people died there and the beds were still in there. Lucian and Jason were very brave, they were not afraid, they laid on the bed which many people had died on. They are great. It's an exciting activity, I liked it.

by Yiping
Yesterday evening we went to Manly to see the ghost house. We listened to ghost stories, we see the hospital, room, dining room and bathroom, that very terror, we are send out ghosts sound, we are afraid the ghost will creep out.

by Platina
On October, 25, at 5 :00pm, the sky became dark and the air was wet. That's a good day to see the ghost. Then, we lost the way, like a lot of horrible movies. Of course, we found the way and got there safely. We lifted the light, and followed the guide through class 1 and class 2, and entered class 3. There's a small room for doctors to dissect corpses to find the reason why they died. We entered the room, everyone was nervous because there's something like a human body covered by the white cotton. The guide started to talk about that room's history. Suddenly the guide raised the white cotton, someone shouted, but that was just a model.

HALLOWEEN PARTY Thursday, 25 October 2007
by Shaun

Yesterday was Halloween. The Halloween party was my first. In China we never have Halloween Day. Yesterday was a very happy day. The party in the School was from 2pm-3pm. The first game was to use our mouth to bite apples. The apples were in the pail and there was some water in the pail too. The second game was four people make a team. My team was Amir, Billy, Ron and I. I am a mummy. They used toilet paper to wrap up me. We were very united and finished very quickly. At night we went to the Quarantine Station Ghost Tour. We heard legends and ghost stories of the past in the hauntingly beautiful old buildings at North Head. This is my first Halloween. I believe I will have my second, third...Halloween in Australia.

And later that afternoon there was another Halloween party. And as the sun went down things were even scarier! There were more mummies, seances and games. You can see all the photos here

HALLOWEEN SHORT STORY COMPETITION Thursday, 25 October 2007

There were many excellent entires for this year's Halloween writing competition. The runners-up who received Maewill T-shirts were Vince for writing a story about a boy who was actually a scary doll in a box, Lin for her story about an urn for ashes with Susan's name on it...being found beside her actual dead body, Brian for writing a story about a couple sleeping in a bed at a motel who hear a voice in the night saying 'I'm behind you'. In the morning they find a corpse in their mattress! And Amir for his stories about killer ants and tourists disappearing in Hawaii.
Third prize of a Maewill T-shirt/movie ticket/camera went to Jason for his story about a delicious cake which is given to all new visitors but the ingredients of the cake are the previous visitors...
Second prize of Maewill T-shirt/movie ticket/camera went to Michaela for her true story about her friend working as a nanny in London who sees the ghost of the previous tenant who was burned in a fire made by a candle.
First prize Maewill T-shirt/movie tickets/camera went to Oscar. Here is his story:

A long time ago, a woman lived with her son in a small town.
Every day she was beaten by her husband.
One day, she climbed a mountain with her son for a picnic.
In climbing, her son told her that he wanted to go to the toilet.
But this picnic area didn't have a toilet.
The women decided her son should go near the cliff.
However, suddenly the woman saw an illusion. Her son looked like her husband with a scary face.
So she instinctively pushed her son off the cliff.
Several years later, she had another son.
He looked with similar to the first son.
The son always liked climbing mountains even though the mother didn't like to after the accident.
However one day they climbed the mountain where the first son had died.
The second son wanted to go to the toilet, like the first son.
When he said the same words as his brother the woman tried to forget the accident, so she stood with her back to her son.
At this moment, the second son whose face had turned white, came close to his mother and whispered 'Mum', Please don't push me this time
...

And there were more Halloween stories later in the day. Prizes were awarded to the following students: Karina for writing a true story about waking up in her home smelling food and when she went to the kitchen every drawer was open, the stove was on, the fridge was open and...no-one was there! Rafael for his diary entries of people in a forest in Holland in 1827 who have all disappeared...
Third prize of Maewill T-shirt/movie ticket/camera went to Diego for writing an Australian horror story about people being eaten by a mysterious animals...which turns out to be the last remaining Tasmanian Tigers...
Second prize of Maewill T-shirt/movie ticket/camera went to Andre for his story about some one going online and seeing a website with horrible pictures of murdered bodies which is actually a game called 'Slaughterhouse' where you have to escape from a serial killer...and then later that night seeing a man dressed like the killer in his mirror...then hiding in his wardrobe while writing this story...
First prize of Maewill T-shirt/movie tickets/camera went to Peter. Here is his story:

This story happened to my best friend who I really trust and I am sure that he would never make it up.
It was about 4 years ago when me and my friend Paul were having a beer in a pub. We had only one beer because he promised his grandfather that he would go fishing with him the next morning.
When Paul got home his parents were already asleep so he went to the living room to watch TV for a while.
Turning on the TV and browsing the channels he realised that there was only one channel working. They were showing a program about fishing. Suddenly the TV turned off and Paul was not able to turn it on again. It seemed to be broken.
So he went to the bathroom to have a shower. As he was having a shower he could see through the foggy glass that the door to the bathroom was slowly opening.
The door was almost half way opened but he didn't see anybody there.
He thought that it was his parents so he shouted 'I'm in here! Can you please wait!'
There wasn’t any response and the door was left open.
He quickly put his towel around his waist and went out of the bathroom shouting in anger 'Can't you see that I'm having a shower? Why didn't you close the door?'
His parents went out of their bedroom woken up by his screaming and wanted to know what was going on so late at night.
While Paul was trying to explain to them that somebody had opened the door while he was in the shower and that the TV was broken, the phone rang.
It was Paul's grandmother crying and saying that his grandfather had just died.
Paul knew that his grandfather had come to say his last goodbyes.

REBECCA'S LAST DAY Tuesday, 23 October 2007

We've known this day would finally come and now it's here - Rebecca's last day (for a while anyway). She's going to have a baby very soon so she's taking some time off to relax beforehand and then, of course, some time off afterwards to look after her new baby. Have fun Rebecca and see you, and your new baby, soon!

SYDNEY WILDLIFE WORLD Friday, 19 October 2007
by Mat

Today we are visiting Sydney Wildlife World. It's the first time I have been here.
Everybody is exciting. There are many Australian animals in this wildlife world. When I went into the house I saw many beautiful butterflies. I want to touch them, but there was glass in front of me. It seemed like a new world. After, we saw new animals. For example: Tasmanian Devil, Rock Wallaby, Koala and Bilby. I loved the Bilby. I have never seen it before. It's so lovely. It's an interesting thing. It's good for us.

Nature is close to my heart!
by Brian C

Let's take a deep breath! It's the smell of Nature!
Who knows there is a nature world in the city? I know! With the soft wind of Darling Harbour, we arrived at our destination - Wildlife World. It has several different themes, like birds, snakes, spiders, kangaroos and so on. Although the lovely animals are separated by thick glass we still feel we are standing in the real nature world. There are many boards of information about the animals, like diets, adaptation, habits. Wow it's not only a journey but also a good chance to learn! What amazed me is the animals inside the room, also it's not 100% nature world, but they also stay in a nature state to show us how they live, how they grow. All the things teach me a lesson, how to deal with the relationship between human-beings and nature. We need love, respect, care and heart to believe it, don't we?

SPORTS DAY Friday, 12 October 2007
by Nicole

Today we went to Courtsportz in Dee Why to play tennis, basketball and squash. The High School students played a lot of basketball and they looked really professional. The girls tried squash for the time and by the end of the day they had improved. There was a real battle on the tennis court. Oscar challenged everyone but no one could beat him. After giving 100% everyone was well and truly ready for lunch by 12 o'clock. Well done, everyone's a winner!

by Linda
Today I was so looking  forward to going to Courtsportz in Dee Why to do some exercise such as tennis, basketball and squash. A lot of high school students liked to played basketball, but I don’t like basketball at all. Everyone challenged Oscar on the tennis court but no one could beat him and even the teachers couldn’t beat him either. Today was my first time to play squash. I could not play well. In the end, I still could not play too well. In the time close to lunch time everyone was looking so hungry and I was also hungry as well. We all did a good job today.

GOODBYE JOZEF, SEE YOU IN DECEMBER Friday, 12 October 2007

Jozef has been studying at Maewill since December 2006. During that time he has become good friends with all the teachers, staff and students at Maewill. He's leaving in 2 weeks to visit his family in Slovakia but the good news is, he's coming back in December so he'll be here for the Christmas Party and New Years Eve in Sydney. And his son is also coming to study at Maewill in June next year. Here are a few words from Jozef about his time at Maewill.

by Jozef from Slovakia
I don't believe it, I'm going home. After one year I have nice memories. I know, I wasn't always a good student, but I was very happy studying here. Now I've got more friends, I know more about Australia and the English language. I will never forget this time, that was for me a new and very nice time. I missed my family all the time, but at school I felt better. Maewill school is one big family, helpful and I'm very happy to becoming back. Sydney and the people are beautiful. I just need to say a BIG thank you to all the teachers and my new friends from Korea, Japan, Slovakia.

BOGONG MOTHS EVERYWHERE Thursday, 09 October 2007

Have you seen many of these moths around recently? They're known as the Bogong moth. They are a night-flying moth which appear in large numbers during spring. The moth's name comes from their occurrence on granite mountains - known as "Bogongs" by local Indigenous Australians. They make lengthy migrations to spend summer months in caves and crevices of rocks in the Australian Alps, notably in the region of the Bogong High Plains in Victoria (pictured above). They are attracted to lights, like those seen at night in the Sydney and Canberra areas. Large numbers may enter houses or other buildings to rest during the day. But don't worry, they usually only stay in Sydney for a week or 2 then continue their journey.

OCTOBER GRADUATES Thursday, 09 October 2007

Henry and Jun have finished their studies at Maewill English College and are now both heading to tropical Hayman Island to get some work experience and, more importantly, put their English to good use. Well done and enjoy your new adventure.

Lucian has graduated from the Preparation for High School class and is starting at St Augustine's next week. Lucian has consistently worked to improve all his language skills while he's been at Maewill and we're sure he will also succeed at high school. Congratulations Lucian and keep up the good work! And Renato has finished his IELTS exam preparation course. He sat the General IELTS exam last week at UTS and is now eagerly awaiting his results. Good luck Renato and remember to keep practising your writing!

SYDNEY TOWER Friday, 05 October 2007
by Brian C.

It's a must! That's what want to say. I knew today would be a big day and it really was. Sunshine, blue sky, soft wind. What are we waiting for? Let's go! On the way, to be honest I have never seen such beautiful scenery, just like a feast for the eyes. After a 30 minute ride Sydney Tower was standing front of us. Awe inspiring, I said. Before we went to the top of the tower we saw a short video about the history of the tower. After the video we took  the lift to the top. "Ding." It arrived and the door opened slowly. we couldn't help saying, wow. Through the window we got the whole view of the city. At this moment our cameras were the busiest. To my surprise even in the city there are also many green plants keeping us company, not only tall and old buildings standing there like other cities. Our Sydney is a real 'green city'. I'm so happy that I had made the right choice to to be here in Sydney. I love you Sydney!

Student writing by Ryan
Today was a wonderful day. First of all we had a little test at school. It's not easy but not hard either. After that we went to Sydney Tower. we watched a 3D movie which talked about Australia. That was exciting, I enjoyed it. We went up the famous Sydney Tower after we finished the movie. From the tower I can see many buildings in the city. I can also see Manly Beach, Darling Harbour and also the bridge. the views are amazing but I think they will be more beautiful at night. so we had a wonderful time there and I won't forget this.

There are lots of bright students at Maewill and the Trivia Quiz on Thursday night was a chance for everyone to prove it. There were thirteen teams of 4 or 5 people and Mae had prepared a selection of general knowledge and Australian questions to test everyone's skill. Pizza arrived half way through the evening and gave everyone more energy to keep answering the questions. After four gruelling rounds the winners emerged. Congratulations Shaun, Jennifer, Rosalyn and Gustavo.

FRESHWATER BEACH BBQ Friday, 28 September 2007

Summer is nearly here! The forecast was for 27 degrees today in Sydney and, even though it was windy, the weather was perfect for a beach BBQ. Freshwater Beach is one of the nearest beaches to Maewill and there are great BBQ facilities there too. The sand is beautiful and white and the water today was an amazing turquoise colour.

It's the perfect place to relax after a difficult test, chat with friends and enjoy some traditional Aussie tucker. Amir, as always took control of the BBQ and his capable assistant Deborah helped out with the onions and capsicum. Amir said that one day he might open an Aussie BBQ restaurant in Moscow - I can imagine it would be very popular in winter!

Some of new students from Slovakia and the Czech Republic had just come from Hawaii and they said the beaches here in Sydney are nicer - wow! Rodrigo was a little disappointed the surf was so small today but he has a couple of longboards at his apartment so he was considering running home to get them.

MAEWILL NEWS Wednesday, 26 September 2007

Yuriko and Ricardo got a surprise when they saw each other at Maewill last week; they used to study together and now they are studying together again - at Maewill. And Aimee visited us too. She's just got back from a trip to America where she was a camp counsellor helping young people. Now she's off to the Gold Coast to see Fiona. Say 'Hi' from us.

We found out last week that April, who is in class 3C, is a professional hairdresser who has cut the hair of some famous actors and pop singers in South Korea so if you need a new hairstyle...and Jana is very happy as she is doing some creative work with a well known Sydney sculptor. Asae graduated last week and is heading back to Japan to start work. Best wishes Asae and well done on your English progress!

Marosh, Miro, Pavel and Rado graduated last week too. They all arrived at the same time and have been living together in Dee Why. They are going to be tourists for awhile and enjoy a well deserved holiday travelling around Australia. Remember to send us a postcard! And Tony and Joe, Preparation for High School students have also graduated and are now ready to start High School in Australia. Well done and be nice to your teachers!

Marina should be smiling, she just got her IELTS result. She needed 7 to work as a pharmacist in Australia and she got...7.5! Congratulations Marina and thanks for all your hard work - it was great to have a student as dedicated as you at Maewill. Steven, Gary and Justin were Preparation for High School students at Maewill and they called in to say hello to the staff and teachers. They've just finished their St Augustine's Year 11 exams and are on holiday at the moment - the perfect opportunity to start preparing for Year 12!

Bruno, who has been studying English at Maewill for over a year, graduated this week. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of him - he's promised to visit. Congratulations Bruno! Happy Birthday James! James is celebrating his Birthday this weekend so remember to wish him 'happy birthday' when you see him next week - but don't ask him how old he is!

When you look at the photo it seems as if Bridgeman has graduated. Well, that's only half true. He's finished his first course and has decided to extend his visa and do another course at Maewill. If you haven't seen it yet, you have to have a look at his beautiful video here. And Jarka has come to visit us again from Slovakia but this time it's only 20% holiday and 80% business. Jarka is an agent in Slovakia and the Czech Republic and has come to Sydney with 6 new students: Radka, Michaela, Peter, Zuzana, Matus and Michal. Welcome to Sydney and Maewill English College!

MID-AUTUMN MOON FESTIVAL Wednesday, 26 September 2007

If there is one time of the year that students might get homesick it's during important celebrations and festivals. Mae and York organised moon cakes for all the Preparation for High School students and wished them all happy 'zhongqiujie'. And Amir and Anvar got to try a new Chinese delicacy!

HIGH SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENTS Tuesday, 25 September 2007

The Maewill alumni is growing bigger by the year and we're always getting news about the achievements of past high school students: academic, sporting and extra curricular. Here's a quick summary of what these Maewill graduates have been up to. Ronny and Daphne recently participated in a Toastmasters (public speaking) event and achieved commendations for their efforts.

Glen had been working with some of his friends to set up a website for foreign students studying in Sydney. In addition to that he took part in an English speaking competition. Here's his story:

I dramatically joined in the "2007 Plain English Speaking" competition which was held by The Sydney Morning Herald. I was a member of our school's public speaking team. My original intention was just to practice my English speaking skill, it wasn't to participate in competitions. When this competition was on last term, year 11's half yearly examination was on. Then our teacher decided to send us, two international boys to take part in the event. We were the only two international students whose first language was not English in the competition. We both got an award, a certificate of participation and more importantly we both learnt a lot from the competition. It was an unforgettable and precious experience for me. Thanks to MEC for inspiring my potential.

St Luke's recently held their graduation ceremony for Year 12 students and among the Maewill students there were some outstanding achievers including Grace who is the first international student to be chosen as a student leader and also came first in Chemistry, ESL and Chinese. Ben, Larry, Jason, Frank, Eminy, Jessica, Janice, Alice, Carla, Hyun Ah and Steve (with his parents) all attended the ceremony and now have to start preparing for their final exams. Good luck! They all received flowers and certificates for their efforts and it was great to see York and their friends, Sila and Linda from Stella Maris, there for support.

OCEANWORLD Friday, 21 September 2007
by Diego Cipoli

After a coffee at Cafe Cruz, we went inside Oceanworld. It was dark inside, but I wasn't scared. I enjoyed seeing sharks, turtles, string rays - especially when they were being fed. I found it very interesting. Then we went upstairs to see a presentation on Australia's venomous snakes and spiders. I learnt that the horse is the most common cause of death by an animal in Australia. I thought the crocodile would be hard to touch, but it wasn’t. It was soft, amazing.

GOLD COAST GRADUATIONS AND GOODBYES Thursday, 20 September 2007

Celenio graduated this week. He studied for 24 weeks at MEC GC and finished his course last Friday.
He is a  lovely guy and everybody loved him. He always made us laugh and happy, even though his English was not good at the beginning he always was thinking about making jokes in English. We all miss him very much already. Here are his impressions:

Dear Maewill,
I studied at Maewill English College on the Gold Coast, I enjoyed all my time. The teachers and staff are really friendly with good skills, I will never forget them, I love all of them. When I arrived in Australia I was a little bit nervous, because everything was different specially the language, but the Maewill staff helped me with a lot of things, they helped me to get my visa work permission and tax file number also they helped me to open my account in the bank, library card and more. While I was studying at Maewill, there were a lot of laughs, the school always has a great atmosphere, the teachers staff are very funny, they are lead by the diplomatic and crazy Fiona. Everyday I had a different reason to come to school, I made good friends in school. I just knew some verbs but couldn't speak English however when I finished my course I was in the advanced class. Maewill has a great combination that is hard to find in Australia It is a nice price and excellent quality, I'm happy with my decision to studied here. The Gold Coast is a beautiful place and offers a variety of restaurants, cafes, shopping centres, entertainment and sport facilities, you can find here an excellent environment for both living and studying..... I almost forget you will also see perfect waves. I want to to say THANKS to all those who helped me to improve my English, Mr Collins, Fiona, Angela, Lubosh, Melinda and the others...
Celino

And Ryoko has also finished her time at MEC. Ryoko was doing work experience from TAFE GC. She worked at reception and helped teachers and students. She will be missed as she was a very nice and sweet person. She had a great time with us and many new experiences. Thanks Ryoko and best of luck in the future from all the teachers, staff and students at Maewill Gold Coast.

GYM CLASS Friday, 14 September 2007

Student Writing by Bin

What a nice day it is. We went to the gym. This morning our teacher took us to the gym for exercises. Everyone prepared for it and couldn't wait. So, let's go! After 15 minutes walking we arrived at the gym. It's so beautiful and modern. There was a beautiful lady leading the way as we did the exercises. Firstly, we did body building exercises. Everyone was laughing and learning how to do the movements. We did the exercises for awhile and we ran around the room. Wow, it was so good. Everyone felt well. I think doing sports is more than good for our health but also good good to develop your spirit of never giving up. It teaches you to carry on, never stop until you have tried your best. Because before you can achieve you must behave. It is a really wonderful day, I'm lovin' it!

Student Writing by Amir

This Friday activity was at the gym. We did lots of exercises. All the high school students got really tired. There we met a very good instructor. She helped us a lot. She taught us how to use all the equipment. It was very exciting and we also had fun. The instructor taught us how to do weights. She showed us some funny exercises. I liked running. I ran 2 kilometres and got very tired. Some students wanted to be members of the club so I think that many students will go there again.

TEACHER NEWS Wednesday, 12 September 2007

There's always a lot of student news but every now and again there is also some teacher news. This month we say goodbye to Matt. Matt has been teaching the General English course and the advanced High School class. He's heading back home to England with his family but assures us he'll be back again soon. Tathiana and Cynthia are always busy helping students but today I managed to get both of them together for a photo - not easy. After trying 5 times to take a photo Cynthia took the camera and managed to take a great photo of them both herself.

And there's more exciting news from Rebecca. She's having another baby, it's due in 8 weeks but she won't tell anyone if it's going to be a boy or girl - we'll have to wait and see. So, if you see Rebecca walking up the stairs carrying lots of books and student homework make sure you give her a hand!

And last but not least, there is a new teacher at Maewill, Nicole. You may have seen her walking around or maybe you're in her afternoon Conversation class. Either way, be sure to welcome her to Maewill when you see her.

HI YURI Wednesday, 12 September 2007

Yuri came to visit us today. Yuri studied English at Maewill over 2 years ago and Katy, Jesse and Deborah were very surprised to see him. He's doing well and his English is great! The teachers remember when he first arrived at Maewill and had just started to learn English. It was fantastic to see such a big improvement. Thanks for visiting Yuri, come again!

STUDENT GRADUATIONS Wednesday, 05 September 2007

It's been a busy month at MEC with plenty of student graduations. It's an exciting time as one chapter closes and another one begins. For some students this means returning to their home country, back to university, travel around Australia or a short break before returning to Maewill to continue studying English. This month we say goodbye and good luck to Giovani (who'll be back in September), Ricardo (returning to Spain), Nikola (heading home to Serbia), Fernanda (and her husband, Andre who are off to England before returning home to Brazil to start a family) and Frost (who is now studying at St Augustine's).

STUDENT WRITING - Music
by Shige

Music has many advantages first of all.
Music is fan and give relax for me.
Also, you listen to the music got relax for example: you can finished work when you listen to the music on the bed you get relax and good sleep.
However, music also has some disadvantages.
Firstly: if you want to listen to the music in outside you need some player, for example: Ipod or MP3.
Secondly: you not want to listen to music than you heard music from other room, very noisy. Per example: you go to the bed but your friend listen to the music very big sound, you can't sleep.
Despite the disadvantage I prefer music, because music is very good.

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Living With Many People
by Flavia

Living with many people has many advantages.
In my house live six friends. I love them!
They are my family in Australia, like this I reduce missing my family in Brazil.
Living with many people also has some disadvantages. My house is always busy.
I share one bedroom with one girl and two boys. It is a mess.
I prefer living with many people because I spend less money on food, rent and expenses.
I am so happy in Australia.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Working in Australia
by Caio

Working in Australia has a many advantages. First of all, you earn make good money. With your money you pay your bills and travelling. Also you have flexible time for work. Per example I worked from 4 o'clock until midnight. And I have time to study.

However working in Australia also has some disadvantages. Firstly it's hard work, secondly you don't have time for your hobbies. For example you can't go to the beach every day.

I prefer working in Australia to working in Brazil, because I get more money.

The Advantages of Cycling

by Darlan Bem Borges

I like riding a bike because I can go to different places. I do exercise and fell the wind on my face. With a bike I produce adrenaline and endorphin into my body it makes fell me nice. I will go do a bike trip so I want to do my exercise as one option of transport. I don't see disadvantages in my hobby because I like it. However I don't have a bike in Australia in the time therefore I need buy a bike.

HYDE PARK AND AUSTRALIA MUSEUM Friday, 31 August 2007
by Saowanee

First, we caught a bus to the Queen Victoria Building and then walked to Hyde park. It was a beautiful day and there were lots of people in the park. When it is sunny in Sydney, everyone goes to the park to relax and eat lunch.

Then we walked to the War Memorial. This is a beautiful monument to the soldiers who fought in wars. It is a good place to learn about Australia's involvement all over the world. After that we walked across the park to the Museum. I thought the Australian Museum was very interesting. There was alot to learn, especially about Aboriginal and Tribal artefacts. I also enjoyed the Fossil Lab. The Search and Discover Room had many hands-on activities. I saw a mummy from Egypt and how to make one from the computer information. To preserve the head of a dead person, you need to suck out the brain through the nose and the base of the neck. It was mysterious and fascinating. I really appreciated this experience as we don't have museums like this in Thailand.

FEATHERDALE WILDLIFE PARK Friday, 24 August 2007

by Jana (Slovakia)
Last Tuesday I promised my flatmate and good friend April that I would come to Friday's activity. I have never been to an OZ zoo before, but I'm interested in OZ wildlife.
We caught a special busand travelled one hour to some special place called Featherdale Wildlife Park.
There we met a lot of native animals. I touched a kangaroo for the first time in my life. A very nice girl told us about some lovely animals like Kangaroos, Frog-mouthed Owls, Two-headed Lizards and Koalas who sleep 20 hours a day.
We took a lot of photos and ate some fats food and happily went back to school.

by Saowanee (Thailand)
This Friday we enjoyed Featherdale Wildlife Park very much. We could see a lot of native Australian animals such as Koalas, Kangaroos, Wombat, Wallabies, Two-headed Lizards etc. We touched a Koala and took photos with it. It loves to sleep more than 20 hours per day and likes to eat eucalyptus leaves. I addition, we fed Kangaroos and took photos with them too. We could see a Kangaroo baby in its mum's pouch. They are lovely marsupials.

by Jun (Korea)
Today is a Friday outdoor activity day for MEC and we went to a wildlife park. There were many kinds of Australian native animals. It is a fantastic opportunity to touch and look at animals up-close.
And I could take photos with my foreign friends with Australian animals.
Today was very beneficial.
I'm looking forward to the next activity.

COASTAL WALK AND BBQ Friday, 17 August 2007
Journal Writing by Shaun

Last Friday we went on a coastal walk from Curl Curl beach to Dee Why beach, then at Dee Why beach we had a BBQ for lunch. On Friday morning we had a test and when we finished at 10 o'clock, we went by bus to Curl Curl beach. Curl Curl beach is very nice. There was a blowing sea breeze when we walked on the beach.

This kind of feeling is very very good. We walked along the cliffs for 30 minutes. At last we arrived at Dee Why beach. We were very hungry. Teachers were already cooking sausages, steaks, bread. We ate these, and ate the ice cream. After the BBQ finished, we went home. I liked last Friday, I like coastal walks and BBQs.

Humans! Their mess is our happiness said the cockroach when seeing honey coming down from its container. IT LOOKS LIKE I'M GONNA HAVE A GREAT DESSERT TODAY!!! WELL IT SMELLS QUITE STRONG BUT IT DOES TASTE MARVELLOUS. I WONDER WHAT INSECTICIDE MEANS AND WHY IS IT WRITTEN ON THE HONEY CONTAINER. OH HUMANS!!
by Rosalyn

Was midnight. Lucy arrives home, tired. Alone, she thinks about taking a shower to relax before sleeping. When she goes for the bathroom, hears a strange noise. She feels fear... “Is it a thief ???” The racket becomes stronger, and terrified, she goes to the bathroom, and turns on the light. She cannot believe what appears in front of her eyes! A towel walking alone, and under of it, a small blind possum….

HARBOUR BRIDGE CLIMB Tuesday, 07 August 2007
by Tathiana

I went to climb the Harbour Bridge on Saturday in the morning. The weather was windy but sunny. I loved climbing the bridge; the experience was amazing. I am afraid about high, special open places, but I like to challenge myself, so I put myself through this climb. I was really nervous in a couple of spots, my legs were shaking, but everything was worthwhile. The view is wonderful you can see all the Harbour's features. There is one spot that you see the cars passing under you, it’s incredible.

In the end you receive a Climb Certificate and one group picture. You can also buy the others pictures that they took of you. It is quite expensive, but I really enjoyed doing that and I am telling you: DO THE CLIMB it is really fun and beautiful, an experience of your life!

TABLE TENNIS COMPETITION Friday, 10 August 2007
by Joe

I love table tennis very much because it is a Chinese ball game. China is number one in the world so we love table tennis and enjoy this game.

and from Matt ...
The table tennis competition was hard fought and the loud support included a Brazilian drummer (thanks Caio). The styles of the table tennis varied from the hard hitting, big smashing approach of Darlan from Brazil to the spin and careful placement approach of Joe from China. Eventually guile won over flare with Joe coming first, Darlan second and Amir, from Russia, third.
