PREPARATION FOR HIGHSCHOOL NEWS

March 2007
- Click here for February PFHS e-newsletter

Welcome to the SECOND monthly Maewill English College Preparation for High School e-newsletter!

These are photos of the Trivia Quiz held this month which saw many of the Preparation for High School students win prizes.

One of the most important events at Maewill this month were the Teacher-Student Feedback sessions held on the 22nd and 23rd March. The teachers and myself held confidential interviews with each student, giving them praise where it was due, letting them know areas for improvement and giving them recommended courses of action. The students appreciated this honest discussion about not only their English but also their life in Australia.

It’s not long to go now for the Term 2 starters so we’re focussing on their problem areas and making sure they have the academic skills in order to continue to improve once they start at high school. Soon everyone will be enjoying a short break over Easter to visit the Royal Easter show and relax before getting stuck into more hard work!

ACTIVITIES

Indoor Rock climbing – 9th March
By Qiang

Rock climbing is a very famous sport in Australia. It is very exciting and good for your health. It can make you strong. But it’s a team sport - you must work with your partner.

The NSW Art Gallery – 16th March
By Katy & Eric

All the students had the chance to sample Australian culture at the Art Gallery of NSW. We went to see the portrait exhibition - the Archibald. There were many wonderful representations of Australian politicians and other well-known personalities. I thought the winning painting was good but I also liked the portrait of Peter Garrett. After checking out Mae's dad's painting we had refreshments at the gallery cafe. Unfortunately Ronny had a toothache and couldn't fully enjoy his baked cheese-cake.
(Addendum – Ronny had one of his wisdom teeth extracted shortly after and is now feeling much better!)

Trivia Quiz – 23rd March
By Rex (nee Seven)

On March 23rd we had a Trivia Quiz at school. Many people joined the competition. And Mae asked the questions. The questions were on topics such as Australia, Sports, Current Affairs & Maewill English College. My group won third place!

Barbecue at Dee Why Beach – 30th March
By Michael

On Friday I went to Dee Why beach for a bbq. The air was fresh. The sky was blue. The sea was the same colour as the sky. Some people swam. Some people surfed. We stayed on shore. We ate hotdogs. We loved the Dee Why bbq.

Earth Hour – 7.30pm 31st March 2007
By Cathya

On the night of March 31, from 7:30PM to 8:30PM is the Earth Hour. During this time, everyone should turn off all their electricity. At first I was quite excited about the hour, but when this hour coming, I just chatted and ate sunflower seeds with my homestay family instead of playing game or doing something exciting. But I had fun during this hour as well. One hour is not a long time - we are doing this to save our planet. At least, I have done something meaningful.

CURRICULUM

The Month in Review
By Sally – Teacher

During the month of March, the high school students wrote and presented two assignments, one about Developing Countries and the other about Australian Bushrangers. We followed up the bushranger assignment by dressing up in costumes and presenting our speeches to some other classes. We also watched Ned Kelly the movie starring Heath Ledger.
We read War of the Worlds both in class and at home, listened to the tape and also watched the movie starring Tom Cruise. The high school students wrote in their journals about the book and will be comparing it to the movie next week. Other journal writing tasks included; describing your world in the year 2307, planning an IELTS essay and describing your dream job.
High school subjects learnt in class spanned such topics as Economics (Globalisation and Population), Business studies (Labour and the Workforce) and Biology (Plants and living things). ESL subjects included learning about the writing skills of brainstorming, paragraph organisation and keeping unity in texts.
We are looking forward to a busy month in April with two new assignments, the first about Ecosystems and we will be beginning a new book too.

Teacher/Student Feedback Sessions – 22nd March
By Steven

Last week, the teachers talked with me in the feedback sessions. It was good. Because the teachers could help me with what is good and what is not good enough. My English is improving slowly.

Journal Writing Extract: My dream job
By Frost

My dream job is a writer, I want to be a writer. I like reading and writing, they can make me comfortable, I like sitting on the bed at midnight, listening to the rain-sound from outside the window, and light music thinking, that's really nice. No light, no people, just like I'm the only person surviving on the Earth.

Assignment Extract: Bushrangers
By Alice

Ben Hall was born on 09 May 1837 at Wallis Plains. He is one of the Australian bushrangers. He kept the same name from the day he was born until the day he died 28 years later. He started life as an honest man, but then became a bushranger. He found himself accused of helping in a robbery. He spent a month in prison, but the police could not prove he was guilty and he was set free. His wife left him and his farm in ruins, his house burnt down and his cattle and sheep stolen.
People thought he was a champion of the poor. Three policemen shot him. They draped his body over a horse and took it to Forbes. I think he is a good man with bad luck.

Speeches: Bushrangers
By Ellen

Last Thursday, some boys and some girls introduced Ned Kelly to the other class. Ned Kelly is a famous bushranger. But everyone liked him except the police. Some girls and boys wore the costume of the period of Ned Kelly. One boy acted the Ned Kelly, one boy acted like the police.
We came to other classes; first we introduced the background about Ned Kelly, and then the person, who acted as Ned Kelly would introduce himself. The teacher and the students would listen and ask some questions. I think this can improve the students' spoken English, it also can improve their hearing.

Ned Kelly the Movie
By Amir

Last week we saw a movie about bushrangers. The film was about a famous Australian bushranger Ned Kelly. It was great. Many students liked it. When the movie finished everybody talked about Ned Kelly. I think film was really very good, nice music, great actors. It was interesting and exciting. All the students were happy.

Journal Writing Extract: War of the Worlds
By Daphne

Have you ever thought that one day Martians will come to attack us? In the War of the Worlds, we see this unbelievable event happens.
The War of the Worlds is H. G. Well’s science-fiction novel. And the film has the same name, too. Recently we finished reading the novel and watched the film.
Human-beings were the dominator in this beautiful world. But one day, a kind of outer-creature appeared. They were stronger, more cruel, and more powerful. They treated human-beings just like human-beings had done to ants. What would people do when they were in front of death? Selfishness, jealousness, and fear, all the weak points came out. But love and hope never disappeared. What touching stories happened in the war? How did human-beings beat the Martians in the end? You shouldn’t miss it.

Assignment Extract: Developing Countries
By Sherrie

My assignment focused on Mexico. This country has a magical culture, colourful history, interesting geography and will leave a deep impression with you.
Mexico is the southernmost country of the North American continent. Its covers a total area of 756,066 square miles and has 87,341,000 people. Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and it’s one of the largest cities in the world. Children with one Spanish parent and one Indian parent are called mestizos. Today, they make up the majority of the Mexico population. Festivals are important in Mexico, and people spend a long time preparing for them. You can go to see them celebrate festival almost every day of the year if you travel around Mexico.

Journal Writing Extract: Write about your dream job

Ronny: I’ve become used to being a normal professor

Ronny (Mr. Yunlong Chen) is the Chinese boy who got the golden medal from IOI* 5 years ago, representing Australia, with a special Australian passport. He is also the guy who won the Fields** in his first year as a freshman at MIT***, as an Australian. All Australians shall remember this legend, but how is he now?
Thankfully, a few weeks ago, the Sydney Morning Herald got his permission to visit his life in United States. Let’s have a look at his current situation.
On the morning that day, Ronny woke up very early to do some morning exercise. He told Sydney Morning Herald that this habit came from the schedule in his high school in China. After a shower and a light breakfast he drove to the mathematics institute in MIT, and then began to work as “Professor Chen”.
From his timetable he knew he had a lesson at 10:00. Before that he marked some students’ work and went through the memo he’d made the night before. Unluckily none of us knew mathematics well so we didn’t actually understood what Ronny said in class that day. However, we were amazed at the laughter from his students when he told something funny. After the lesson we randomly interviewed several students. They told us that they loved his class not only because of the achievement he’d got, but also the method he taught. “He can always inspire our love to mathematics.” One of the students said.
Usually in the afternoon, Ronny would be doing some research. Not willing to disturb him, we didn’t follow him to his studio although he had invited us to. In the evening after dinner with his family, he started to do some preparation for the lessons the next day.
Later that night, at the end of our trip, he took the initiative and gave us a summary of his feeling as “Professor Chen”. It was a perfect ending.
He said to Sydney Morning Herald, “As well as other professors in universities, I’m required to do some research and some teaching at the same time. I’m lucky because I love both. After all this praise and acclaim, I think I’ve become used to being a normal professor. In fact, I prefer to be called ‘a teacher’.”

** the Fields: the highest mathematics award in the world
*** MIT: Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Today is 8th March 2307, my home is a big castle made from clear glass above the sea. I can see fishes outside the window. And I just eat pills for my meals. When I finished my meal I met my family. I met parents, grand parents and great grand parents. After, I went to my school room and I talked with my teacher and friend using a computer.

Chickenpox
By Tony

The week before last I had chicken pox.
On my back there were small, red and swollen lumps and it was very painful.
Every day at home I rested, took medicine and liquid medicine. But I very much wanted to go back to school to study, because at home it was very boring.
