Hello to all concerned with the Preparation for High School students from everyone at Maewill!
We saw two more students graduate in May and start high school – Qiang and Frost.
But before they left we had a MEGA Party and they were able to impress us with their singing. Everyone came in fancy dress that day - even Dame Edna made a special appearance.
Also some ex-students came back to join the party and to give us an update on their experiences of studying at high school in Sydney and living in Australia.

Apart from all the fun, there was a mixture of sadness and happiness when Aimee left us for adventure in the U.S and when a former student, Tathiana replaced her as receptionist.

ACTIVITIES

Ten-Pin Bowling
By Michael

It was my first time to play Ten-Pin Bowling at Dee Why. But it was so exciting and fun. When I got there, we had to change shoes, because the floor is smooth. At first, you need to find the ball size for you, then you can choose 2 balls to play. When you play it, you need to adjust your step. You must take 3 steps, then you can throw the ball. You must throw it hard, because sometimes you can not roll them. When you begin to throw the ball, you need to bow, then you can throw it. If you have not played Ten-Pin bowling, you should have a try. It is amazing and funny.

Mother’s Day Competition
By Lucian

When I found out my poem won first prize, I was so happy. I didn’t believe it. At once, I called my mother to tell her this news. She was so happy that she cried. That evening my parents told me they’re proud of me. This is the first time I heard that. This prize will encourage me to improve my English. I believe my English will get better and better.

Mega Party
By Ellen

On 31st May, we had a Mega Party. Students and teachers must wear fancy dress during the day. The school was decorated fantastically, many beautiful balloons on the roof, and many coloured lights. We ate pizza, sang songs and danced. My class sang the song “As long as you love me”.
We were very happy and some high school students who have graduated from Maewill came back and joined us. We all had a beautiful day. Every one enjoyed the wonderful day.

Soccer
By Tony

Last Friday we played soccer. I was in a team with Amir and Deborah! Our team always wins. This is not a joke. After  I play soccer, I am so tired. I think I need more time to play soccer. I am very happy. I enjoy this game.

Craft Class
By Joe

The Friday activity usually involves leaving Maewill but not this week. Katy and Andrea prepared a craft class for the students and after a couple of hours of hard work we finished our masterpieces. Jana played the piano while she painted; Renata and Leticia are thinking about opening a craft shop together - good idea!

CURRICULUM

Katy's Busy Month
by Katy

This month we have studied the Renaissance, native peoples, Oliver Twist and are currently working on an assignment about the Australian Gold Rush. In between all this we still had time to learn 4 songs to sing at the Maewill Mega Party. Michael sang a solo and Kitty and Ellen a duet - very nice. Good bye to Qiang and Frost, and good luck at High School.

High School Tutoring
By Sally – teacher

Tutoring Eric and Ray has been a very rewarding experience for me as a teacher. They came to me during their first week of high school, very distressed about a number of difficult assignments they had due. Ray was struggling with his music and business assignments and Eric was unsure how to write his physics paper. We sat down together and went through the assignment questions in detail and worked out what had to be done. We learned about the Harvard Referencing System and also how to research from a number of different sources like scientific journals, the internet and books. The most difficult thing they have had to learn has been paraphrasing, putting other writer's idea into their own words. Ray put together a presentation and a performance piece for his music assignment. He went so well in his performance that he was asked to join the school orchestra! Eric worked very hard on his physics assignment and I have no doubt he'll do well when he gets his results. Good luck at high school boys. We wish you all the best.

Readers: Dracula and Oliver Twist
By Kitty

We read different novels every two weeks. We have read Dracula and Oliver Twist recently.
Dracula is a horrible story about vampires. People who like mysterious things will be interested in this novel. After we finished the book, we watched the movie Dracula that was very exciting.
Oliver Twist is about a poor orphan born in a workhouse who wants to find a new life in London. He was made use of by some thieves. In the end, he survived. We also watched the movie. I was in tears when I watched this movie.

Friday Tests
By Amir

Every week we do the Friday test. It's very interesting because when we are writing we also checking our learning and memory. Some people complete it very quickly but some of them need more time to finish test. When we are writing we are thinking and trying to remember some grammar or vocabulary as well. And it helps us to know if we understand the theme or not. In my opinion Friday's test is the best thing to check our learning.

Journal Extract: Music
By Joe

In my country, I think pop music is the most important. Second is national music.
We know in Australia that a lot of people love listening to music, and they listen everywhere. On the bus you can always see people enjoying music. But in my country it's very different, in my country on the bus maybe you can only see the young people listening to music. Some people just listen to music at home and now in my country it's very popular to listen to music from the internet. Some young people listen to music from CD's, because they are fans.
My favourite music is pop music and Hip-Hop music, and I really love American Hip-Hop singers. When I listen to it I feel very good.
Here, I love Australian country music, because it's very relaxing to listen to the beautiful melody.

Assignment Extract: Summarising and Referencing
By Kitty

The history of Christianity.
Christianity is the largest religious tradition in the world and it has about one and a half billion followers. History plays a more important role in Christianity than any other religion. Every one should love God; love themselves and others (Coleman, N.G, 1999, P150). “He who does not love does not know God; for God is love.” (John, 4:8)

Journal Extract: Write about an important event in your country’s history and how you view it today.
By Ellen

My country has a lot of important events, and I think the anti-Japanese war is a really important event. During the second word war, the Japanese wanted more power and they wanted more territory so they became aggressive towards China. At first the Chinese government didn’t realize what the Japanese were doing because they wanted to keep more power against the Communists, another political party in China. But things got worse, the Japanese people began to kill a lot of Chinese people, they invaded our land. In 1937, the anti-Japanese war broke out. The national party and the Communist Party decided to stop fighting each other and combine together against the Japanese.
At first, the Chinese people had the weaker position, because the Japanese had a lot of advanced weapons. They had a lot of guns. But at a cost we won the war in 1945. We fought this war for years. The Soviet troops helped us against the Japanese. But many Chinese people died during the war.
Now, everything has past, we live in a peaceful country, a peaceful word. But we’ll remember this history. This is the most important event in my country. This is the war where we wanted to protect ourselves. And many people died in order to protect my country. We’ll remember the people who died in the war forever. We’ll remember this history forever.

PERSONAL

First Impressions of Australia
By Anvar

When I arrived in Sydney, Australia I was excited and surprised. Because before I thought Sydney is a fast city but it's a very relaxing and slow city. But Australia is a beautiful and amazing country. Before I had never seen Aboriginal people but last week I went to the city and saw them, it was fantastic. I am enjoying staying in Australia. It's a wonderful country.

And finally, congratulations to Steven, Daphne and Ronny on graduating from Maewill and beginning High School!
