PREPARATION FOR HIGH SCHOOL NEWS

June / July 2007

Hello relatives and friends of our Preparation for High School students! How are you?
During the wet and wild winter months students have been concentrating on improving their English skills, homework and assignments, as well as enjoying indoor activities such as Maewill cinema, cooking, parties and indoor sport.
We’ve said goodbye to some students who started high school – Ellen, Kitty and Michael – and welcomed new students – TJ, Mat, Carsten, Shaun, Lin, Shulin, Annie – with many more due to start over August and September.
Below are some articles in the students' words about their life in Australia during June and July. Enjoy!

Love Mae and William

ACTIVITIES

The Harbour Bridge Pylon, The Rocks and Kangaroo Pizza - 21st June
By Lucian

We went to the Harbour Bridge on 21st June. It has a long history, it's an amazing beautiful building. I didn't know how people built it until I watched the movie about Harbour Bridge. Then we went to the top of the bridge, we could see the whole of Sydney from there. It's beautiful. When we finished at the Harbour Bridge, we went to eat kangaroo pizza. It was the first time I ate it, it was not bad. We all enjoyed ourselves that day.

Barbecue at Collaroy Beach - 29th June
By Ellen

On Friday we all went to Collaroy Beach for a barbecue. The sky was blue and the sea was very beautiful and the waves were huge. Lots of people were surfing even though the water was cold. Kitty and I took off our shoes and jumped into the sea and my trousers got wet. We drew our English names and our Chinese in the sand. We ate a lot of food including sausages, bread, chips and so much vanilla ice cream. I had a wonderful day; the weather, food and people were beautiful.

Playing Sport
By Tony

I enjoy playing sport – soccer at Manly Vale, basketball, squash and tennis at Dee Why. Also rockclimbing at Brookvale. I think I’m the best basketball player in Maewill. I'm having a holiday in China soon so I'll be able to practise with my friends. When I come back to Aussie I'm excited to start high school.

The Maritime Museum - 6th July
By Amir

Three weeks ago it was a sunny, warm day and we went to the Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour. There were some interesting ships and a submarine. And we had opportunity to go inside the submarine. It was amazing because inside the submarine was very tiny. It was interesting to see how sailors are living in the submarine. Inside the submarine it is very cramped. And also we saw the big Navy fighting ship with lots of ammunition and rockets. I never thought it would be so exciting to see the ship's equipment on the real fighting ship. It was first time I have been inside a submarine. I saw all things inside and I looked through the telescope as well. After the tours on the ships and submarine we went to the Museum. It was wonderful as there were lots of things which connect with life on the ship. I really liked it and I think all Maewill students liked it as well. And after when the tour had finished we enjoyed a great lunch at McDonald's.

Cooking Class - 13th July
By Anvar

In July we had a cooking class. We cooked chocolate crackles and other chocolate desserts. After cooking we watched an exciting movie and ate delicious food. I liked this day at school.

Cultural Exchange Party - 19th July
By TJ

On 19th July we had a cultural exchange party. We ate different food from different countries. We tasted delicious food. I brought seafood noodles but I didn't think it was very good. We had bread, rice, Korean pickles. We listened to music and ate food. The music was very good and the lights changed into different colours. We spoke with each other. We talked about our country and our city .We exchanged information about our country’s civilization. We learned a lot about other country's civilization. We had curry rice with orange juice and chocolate cakes. After we had eaten we felt very full. We enjoyed the cultural exchange party very much.

The Sydney Harbour Cruise - 27th July
By Mat

Last week we went on a Sydney Harbour Cruise. It was my first visit to Sydney Harbour since I arrived in Sydney. The harbour is very beautiful and the water is clear. When winds were coming, I felt very good. Many seagulls were flying in the sky.
When I was on the ship I saw the Sydney Opera House. It's very magnificent. I love it. Before this time I've only seen it on TV. I will never forget it.

My first day at Maewill
By Annie

My first day is very happy. I made a new friend. She comes from China and the same place as me. We are very happy when we are together. We have a delicious lunch.
My teacher is very genial. She teaches me what I should do in my classes. I like her very much. The school is friendly and it is very warm. I could study anything there. So it makes me glad to be here. There are many different things from a Chinese school like
the teachers' teaching method. I think it is a good feeling.
This is my first day in Maewill. I think I will be happy every day here.

Documentary: SUPER SIZE ME !!!!
By Carsten

Two weeks ago we started a new topic 'super size me'. It was a movie about a man who only ate food from McDonald's for 1 month.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday and when the salesperson asked him if he wants super size he had to take the super size. Before they started the documentary he went to the doctor to get a health check. Everything was fine he was completely healthy no diseases or illness. After the month his health condition was terrible. He was totally ill - his liver was damaged and his blood pressure was very high. If he continued to eat
McDonald's food he would probably die. It took over half a year until his health and every body function worked normally again.
After that movie I've changed my mind about eating fast food twice a week. I heard that only once a month is healthy. I now try to eat more vegetables and fruits.
This society is the fattest nation since the world was created - one in every 4 children is too fat and every year more than 300,000 children die because of famine. It's horrible to imagine that the world doesn't care about people who still have nothing to eat.
The people today don't mind about their health so maybe in 20 years to be fat is a trend and maybe it will change that slim people are ugly and loners. It’s not difficult to change your food and push yourself to get a healthy life.

Starting high school
By Kitty

Ellen and I started high school on the 18th of July. That morning was very busy. We got our timetable diaries from our teacher and then she showed us the school map. She told us how to read the map. We started our class at 9.30am;it was chemistry. We read our books and answered some questions. There was a lot of new and difficult vocabulary. Then we had calculus, all about gradients and differentiation. There were so many equations. We tried really hard to understand what the teacher was talking about. We also had Chinese class and the teacher was from Taiwan. She was quite funny and the class was interesting. Classes finished at 6 o’clock and we were all exhausted. I’ve been at school for nearly 2 weeks now and it’s getting easier. My favourite subject is Maths.

Starting high school
By Michael

Everything was new in high school; books, shoes, clothes. When I arrived at school, I met Qiang at the school, then he took me to the classroom to report for duty. I recognized two new students from Beijing. They didn't have any pens and books for the class, so I ripped two pieces of paper for them. Everyone was quiet in the Chinese class as the teacher read us a book. My first day was an exciting day. Thanks for reading.

PERSONAL

The first week in Australia
By Lin

This is the first week I came to Australia, everything is fresh. I had a very long trip and I crossed the Pacific Ocean. I lived in a homestay, with an Australian family. They are friendly and always happy, always talking and laughing. They have two lovely children. The atmosphere in their family is good. On the first weekend, we went to China Town and brought some cups, fast food and everything we need. Then we started studying at Maewill English College.
After my first week in Australia, I felt that Australia is a different country from China, its language is different, its lifestyle is different, its weather is different. Totally different. For me, it's a new start.

My Homestay
By Shaun

My homestay family have 5 people – father, mother, 3 students. They are very friendly. The father is an architect but looks like a mechanic – he can make doors, build floors, everything. The mother can make some cakes – the cakes are very nice. I love them. I love my homestay. I love cake too.

Living with an Australian family
By Shulin

I live with an Australian family in Sydney. They have a very happy family. The husband and wife have two childen. The boy is 3 years old and the girl is 5 years old, they are very lovely. I like them very much .I always play with the two children. The family treat me well. The homestay mother can cook delicious food and she takes care of me. Sometimes they give me some sugars and cookies. I want to talk with them more and more to improve my English speaking. I feel very comfortable to live with them. I'm very happy that I can live with them. We are good friends now.
I think I will have a good time in Australian and living with them!

My Holiday in China
By Joe

Last month I went back to China for about 3 weeks. When I went back, I felt very happy. I met my parents and my best friends. When I first got back, everything was a little unfamiliar. In my home town I ate very good Chinese food. I think the best dish is `fried snake' - very delicious.
And when I went back to China I changed my feeling for studying English. I think I enjoyed my time at Maewill, because I actually have so many good memories and met many different nationality friends.
So anyway I'm happy now.
