Below is some information about the IELTS English examination.
Summary of exam
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a test of English language proficiency which assesses your level of skill in listening, reading, writing and speaking. It is internationally recognised and administered in over 250 centres world-wide.
The test is used as an indicator of English language proficiency for entry into universities, TAFE (Technical and Further Education) colleges, secondary schools and colleges in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada and English language medium universities in Asia, for example, Singapore.
There are two different Modules for the Reading and Writing subsections of the test. The Module you do is determined by your intended course of study.
The Academic Module is for candidates who wish to study at an undergraduate or postgraduate level.
The General Training Module is designed for people who intend to enrol in secondary schools in an English-speaking country or follow a non-degree or non-tertiary course, for example, a diploma or certificate course at a TAFE or business college. You may also take this module for immigration purposes.
In the past students needed to wait 3 months between each attempt at the IELTS exam.
This rule has now ended and it is possible to sit the IELTS exam whenever a test is available.
You do not need to wait 3 months between each attempt.

CONGRATULATIONS ROSALYN

Rosalyn studied for the IELTS exam
at Maewill for 4 months. She recently sat the
Academic IELTS exam and .... she scored 7.5! Wow.
This is what she had to say...
Hi, my name Rosalyn and I'm
from Colombia. I studied for the IELTS test for 4
months and 2 weeks ago I did the test at Sydney
University. On the day of the test I felt a bit
nervous but as the test progressed I felt more
confident. The questions were very similar to the
ones we had studied in the IELTS Preparation
class. This was true for all the sections:
Listening, Reading, Writing and finally, the
Speaking section. The course helped me to know
what to expect from each section and also how to
make better use of the time. My advice for any
student considering doing the IELTS test is take
advantage of the many tips and tricks. Just
by knowing them you can increase your score
significantly. I got my results last week and I'm
proud to say that I exceeded my goal of 7 - I got
7.5! Next year I'll start my Master's Degree in
Project Management at the University of
Technology, Sydney.
STUDENT WRITING - IELTS SUCCESS!
by Manabu Inukai

Manabu (middle) with MEC teachers, Jesse and Katy.
I came to Austrailia in 2003.The first purpose was studying English and travelling. However, I also had a passion for studying mathematics and physics someday secretly. So I had to choose one of them. I decided to go to the University of Sydney at the begininng of last year. (My second year of going to MEC). To go to university, in my case the foundation course, I had to take IELTS and every section must be above 5.0.
The IELTS was so hard for me because of many reasons. For example, the listening test is announced only once, the reading test does not have enough time to answer all of the 40 questions. Also the writing test had too short a time to write both a report and an essay. Finally it was easy to be extremely nervous for speaking time. Therefore, my first IELTS score was very low, 4.0.
So I had to consider a strategy for the IELTS. I took private tutoring once or twice a week, especially for speaking. I wrote plenty of essays. In class, when I have low mood, I always listen to other students as much as possible. I also realised the IELTS was a specific test and it needed experience. I took the IELTS test 4 times.
My last result of the IELTS in September last year was 5.0. Unfortunately, the result of my writing was 4. This does not satisfy the demands of enrolment of the foundation course. Mae, the DOS at MEC, told me that I should re-check my writing score because it was too low for me. So I applied for re-checking. The re-checking took 2 months. I was very upset during this time. Fortunately the result came and the score rose to 5. Overall, the score changed to 5.5. I was very happy with my result. Now I am going to the foundation course from the 20th of February. The subjects of my study are going to be mathematics, physics, chemistry, English and so on.
I am looking forward to having a new life at University. And I appreciate very much MEC for the two years. But I will miss all the teachers and students, including past students at MEC.
Thank you MEC very much, I will never forget MEC!!
Congratulations Manabu from all the teachers and staff at MEC. We are all very proud of you! Best wishes for your exciting future.
