FAQs by Homestay Families
Q. What if I am experiencing problems with my Guest?
A. It is our experience that most problems can be addressed and resolved with effective communication. Try talking directly with your Guest. Be open and honest, and keep in mind that cultural and language differences are common barriers to communication. Being aware of these barriers is the first step to resolving many problems. Remember, you can always contact MEC for advice and assistance with any situation.
Q. What if I want my Guest to move out?
A. You must host your Guest for a minimum of 4 weeks (28 days). After this initial 4 week period either party may give 14 days notice to end the agreement. Please email MEC before giving notice. This will give MEC the maximum amount of time to find you another Guest and the Guest another family.
Q. What do I cook for my Guest?
A. Please try to provide well balanced and varied meals for your Guest. We suggest that you stick to your usual menu and types of food that are eaten in your home. Each Guest is an individual and will have their own likes and dislikes. We ask that you cater to any special requests as you would for your own family.
Q. Who can Host a Guest?
A. MEC recognises that Australian households come in different shapes and sizes. As long as the Guest has their own room, you are living on the premises and you speak English at home you are welcome to apply.
Q. What am I required to provide in the Guest's room?
A. Your Guest room should be furnished with a bed, desk, chair, study lamp, wardrobe and bed & bath linen. We ask that you vacuum and change the bed linen once a week. The Guest is responsible for keeping the room tidy.
Q. Are telephone costs included in the accommodation fees?
A. Rules regarding telephone use are up to each family to decide. Some families allow their Guests to make local calls, others place a jar next to the phone and ask the Guest to pay 20 cents when they make a local call. MEC recommends that you limit the service on your telephone to local calls only. You can do this by contacting your service provider and requesting Call Control. This facility allows you to key in a password to make mobile, STD or ISD calls. If your Guest plans to use the internet you may ask them to install and or connect a telephone line in their own name.
