WORKING HOLIDAY VISAS
On the 14th of April 2005 the Australian Government announced that the Australian Working Holiday Program will be enhanced to encourage more of these holiday makers to undertake seasonal harvest work and contribute to the short-term labour force needs in Australia.
From November 2005, Working Holiday Makers will be able to apply for another Working Holiday visa if they have done at least 3 months of seasonal harvest work in regional Australia. This is a welcome change as at the moment the very popular Australian Working Holiday Visas are only ever available as a once in a lifetime opportunity. People from all 18 countries with which Australia has a Working Holiday agreement will be eligible.
This change has been instigated to help Australian farmers who benefit from the Working Holiday Makers mobility and willingness to take up seasonal work in country areas. It is also though that this move will benefit other industries, as Working Holiday Makers who do harvest work and stay on in Australia for another year will be available to work in other industries such as tourism.
It is expected that more Working Holiday Makers will be encouraged to do seasonal harvest work. It is also thought that this will help make the Australian tourism industry more competitive in attracting more of these valuable tourists and encouraging them to stay in Australia for longer.
